‘Non-EU doctors: Attracting and retaining overseas trained doctors in the Irish health service’
With some 34% of our medical workforce having trained overseas, Ireland’s reliance on international medical graduates is amongst the highest in the OECD. However, overseas trained doctors feel the health system discriminates against them on many levels, which is forcing some to leave and others contemplating working here to reconsider their career options. In his talk, Dr Shakya Bhattacharjee will address many of these pressing issues, including:
Africa Health Placements
Africa Health Placements (AHP) is a South African-based social profit organisation working to address the extreme inequities in access to healthcare through human resource solutions. The organisation’s mission targets health access for the most indigent, partnering governments, civil society and the private sector to do so. AHP defines itself as social profit because its work, while mostly donor-funded, delivers a profit measured in terms of improved healthcare and social indicators.
Direct Medics

Furthermore, as a designated body we support fully the framework for revalidation with the General Medical Council in the United Kingdom.
Dr John Duddy will discuss the progress made following The MacCraith report in June 2014, it’s recommendations, and what the NCHD community needs to persuade them to stay and work in Ireland. Please see below for further information:
“The Working Group that produced the ‘Strategic Review of Medical Training and Career Structure’ (the MacCraith Report) completed its work at the end of June 2014 and, in all, submitted three reports and made 25 recommendations, addressing a range of barriers and issues relating to the recruitment and retention of doctors in the Irish health system. While some positive moves have already been taken to improve conditions for NCHDs, addressing our recruitment and retention issues, and meeting EU working time obligations, much more needs to be done.
IMO Vice President and NCHD Committee Chairman Dr John Duddy will discuss the progress made on such recommendations, and what the NCHD community needs to persuade them to stay and work in this country. He will address such issues as:
· EWTD compliance;
· The transfer of non-core tasks;
· Streamlining training;
· The potential for NCHD leads;
· Promoting a family-friendly workplace;
· Resolving new entrant consultant pay scales; and
· Renewing the NCHD contract.

He has been Clinical Director at the Whitfield Clinic since 2011, responsible for accreditation and clinical governance.
In his talk, Mr Ishtiaq will address both the challenges and opportunities facing those who choose a life in independent clinical practice, in a time of significant health reforms. He will discuss:
· Why choose Independent Clinical Practice?;
· Evolving through innovation and quality improvement;
· HIQA standards for private healthcare;
· Private healthcare under UHI, Hospital Groups and Trusts; and
· Cost of clinical indemnity and Tort reform.
‘Planning for the Future: Who will be the Irish GP in 2025?’
With just one in four recently qualified GPs or trainees planning to stay in Ireland for definite, the country is potentially facing a ‘GP famine’ as more and more doctors consider emigrating. While most new GPs would prefer to stay here, uncertainty about their role in the Irish healthcare system and a lack of defined career progression opportunities are the main factors driving the rise in emigration, according to the ICGP.
Co-author of the 2014 ICGP report ‘Planning for the Future Irish General Practitioner Workforce’, Dr Gerry Mansfield – who represents the College on workforce planning, recruitment and training issues, and who is currently preparing a follow-up to that seminal survey – will address what the Irish GP of the future is going to look like, and what workforce planning decisions need to be taken to ensure the viability of the specialty. Topics to be discussed will include:
‘Your Training Counts: How the voice of trainees can help shape medical education and training’
The Medical Council’s annual survey of trainee doctors in Ireland, Your Training Counts, is a key component of the Council’s role in setting and monitoring standards of medical education and training. With three reports already published from the survey, and more to follow, the Council, along with the wider health system, is using the findings to enhance the experience of clinical training in the Irish health service.
